“Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant”

Many times in the bible we read things that seem to contradict our cultural mindset. I call it “upside-down thinking”. To live we need to die (to self), to gain we need to give, and in this verse, to lead we have to serve.

If we think about it, the best leaders (teacher, boss, coach…) in our lives have been those who really care and would go out of there way to help us. Not just control or lord over us.

Mother Teresa spoke at a Harvard graduation one year. When she spoke, the place was silent. They hung on her every word. Why? People who serve earn authority! At another time while receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, she was asked, “What can we do to promote world peace?” Her response: “Go home and love your family”.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, develop who I am through opportunities to serve and help those around me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
