Get up
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” Matthew 17:6-7 (NIV)
Three of the disciples, Peter, James and John, heard God’s booming voice. That’s why they fell to the ground in great fear. Sometimes we get really scared and fall into a paralyzed state. We just want to lay there in hopes that whatever we fear will just go away.
I find it interesting that Jesus didn’t commend the three disciples for taking the time to worship God. He knew why they went down and told them to “get up, don’t be afraid”. Maybe they couldn’t face God because of guilt from past sins, or their lack of unbelief.
Whatever the reason; fear of failure, afraid of the future, starting a new job or school, getting married, moving to a new town, scared of God’s punishment for a bad choice…, Jesus is saying to us, “get up, don’t be afraid”. He will be by our side to give us the ability to get through our fears.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, help me to get up and not be afraid. Remind me to tap into Your strength to overcome. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
