“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity” Ephesians 5:15-16 (NIV)

As we get older, the days seem to fly by faster. We can get in a rut. We tend to shut off our brains and glaze our way through till the next event that we are looking forward to. We grind it out till the Saturday game, the movie night, a weekend gathering, spring break, vacation… I read a Henry Clay quote that says; “The time will come when winter will ask you what you were doing all summer”.

God tells us in today’s verse to make the most of every day. We can ask Him to point out opportunities to enjoy someone or something. We can ask Him to slow down our “runaway train” of routine living by reminding us to lend a hand, make a friend, appreciate people and things that we take for granted. Don’t wait for a movie to laugh, cry, or feel life’s pleasures and blessings.

I had to chuckle when I read a one-liner by Rodney Dangerfield; “Last year my birthday cake looked like a prairie fire”. We are all getting older. Weaving God into each day, helping or encouraging others, and asking Him to show us how to make the most of each day will slow down the runaway train. It will drastically impact our quality of life.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, help me to make the most of every opportunity. First, help me to see those opportunities. Thank You for the blessings that will follow. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
