“I will punch your lights out”

“Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil” Psalm 37:8 (NIV)

I looked up “fret” in the dictionary. The first definition is, “to feel or express worry, annoyance, discontent, or the like”. The second definition helped me to see today’s verse more as a warning than a suggestion; “to cause corrosion; gnaw into something: ie- acids that fret at the strongest metals”.
At first glance, we look at this verse and see it as God telling us to be a good little boy or girl. But when He tells us something like this, it’s for our own protection. It’s a warning! He’s basically saying, “if we live in anger, it will corrode and gnaw away our very core”.
It does feel good to get angry and rip on others when they annoy us or do wrong to us. We need to quickly identify our anger and hand it over to God.
Here’s some suggested prayers; “Lord, I want to tear my teenage son’s ears out of the sockets right now. Help me to calm down and realize I was once an idiot adolescent”, “Lord, my dad is driving me crazy with his continual nagging. Help me to forgive him and realize that he does care”, “Lord, my wife does the exact same thing to me that she says I do to her, please take my anger and help me to look past her attacks”, “Lord, that ref is costing us the game. Help me to stop imagining myself strangling him and to forgive him so that I can enjoy this game”.
A friend once quoted, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shalt not break”.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, I get bothered. Please don’t allow me to camp out in my anger. Help me to hand it over to You even when it’s a legitimate reason. Thank You for wanting to protect my inner joy and peace. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
