Stop, wait a minute Mr. Postman

“I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ” Philippians 3:8 (NIV)

Paul was clearly expressing his goal in life. He wanted to ‘know’ Christ,‘know’ God.“Know” in this text translates as a very intimate word.

When I first went off to college, there was a young lady that I met over the summer whom which I wanted to stay in touch (like the movie Grease, but without the dancing and singing). Back in those days there was no Facebook, cell phones, email or Skype. So I made my trek down to the post office every day to deliver and pick up my “love letters”.

I would store the envelopes till Sunday morning and open each one with respect and reverence. PSYCH! Are you kidding! I would tear that thing open in the post office and read it over and over, all the way back to my dorm.

I wanted to know about her and what she thought about me. And to really know her, I would spend time with her when I went back home. We would hang out together and talk for hours.

Just like with God. We need to tear into the “love letters” He sent us in the bible (read some Psalms, start with 51). Don’t wait for Sunday morning. Then hang out with Him during the day, talking to Him through our thoughts and thinking about what He wants to say to us.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, show me how to know You more and more. Thanks for being my God and my Friend. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
