Play to win

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love” Galatians 5:13 (NIV)

My younger sister played on an amazing high school volleyball team. The 6 key players were all juniors when they surprised everyone by winning a state championship.

The following year the 6 players all returned as seniors. Expectations were high, as they should have been. But, the season started slow. They were barely winning games, enthusiasm was down, and morale was low.

Losing some matches in the middle of their season seemed to change something. They went on to dominate the rest of their opponents and easily won a second straight state title. What made the change? It was their perspective.

After the losses, they stopped playing “not to lose”. They started “playing to win”.

Just like our relationship with God, we can’t walk around just trying not to sin. Instead, we need to allow God to bless us, enjoy His presence, ask Him for direction and the ability to be ‘free’ to live life to its fullest.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, help me to enjoy the freedom and blessings You have to offer. Help me to avoid and confess sin, yet let my focus be on Your power and hope for a great future. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
