Stuff

“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols”  1 John 5:21 (NIV)

We probably don’t have a little statue in our room with a candle in front of it. We are too sophisticated for that.

Our idol probably has one eye and is in our family room. We stare at it for hours on end. Sometimes bursting out in laughter, sometimes cheering or yelling, but very devoted to our idol. We can give it more time than anything or anyone else.

Our idol could be “stuff” that we think about accumulating. The reason we go to work and even take a side job, away from key relationships and family, is to obtain it. And all we can think about is driving or wearing or using that “stuff”. We start to think; “I am what I have.”

Anything that begins to occupy our minds and hearts and displaces God in our lives is an idol.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, help me to just use stuff and focus on You, my friends and family. And not to focus on stuff and use You, my friends and family. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
