Stop wading, take swim lessons

“We should love people not only with words and talk, but by our actions and true caring”                                                                                                    1 John 3:18 (New Century Version)

The word ‘love’ gets thrown around a lot. The word in this verse doesn’t mean to “be in love” with people, that would be too weird. It’s more of an unconditional caring. Feeling for others and trying to meet their needs.

Sometimes we disguise our ‘love’ for others by caring for those who we know, or hope, will return it in some way.

When I was in middle school I showed love and care to a young lady who just so happened to be the cutest girl in the school. My actions and words were merely attempts to get her to like me (even though she was taller). It worked until another shallow middle school boy showed her love and caring (he was bigger, better athlete, better looking…). I had no chance in the shallow world of middle school.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, help me to “swim in the deeper end of the pool” by truly doing things for others without expecting a return. Thank you that the return comes from You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
