Play dead
“The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice” Proverbs 12:15 (NIV)
I use to feel that being an adult means to have all the answers. But I have learned that a truly mature person is willing to continually evaluate and rethink their approach to life.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan was talking about what to do when encountering a bear. “I heard that we should play dead. Who came up with that, maybe the bears?!” Then Gaffigan looks into his hands as if reading a manual; “Play dead, cover yourself with honey, and climb into a large white plate”.
I’m not sure if playing dead is the best advice, but experts do say we are to stand still and act completely unafraid. That is totally the opposite of what I would feel like doing. Everything in me would say, RUN! But I would surely end up as “fast food”.
The best advisor in my life is God talking to me through the bible, and through the advice of faith-filled people. He says to truly “live” a full life, we need to “die” to ourselves(see Luke 9:24) and help others. Also, to “get” we need to “give” (see Proverbs 11:24-25). This seems the opposite of the common way of thinking.
Basically, we can’t just trust our feelings and first instincts, but we can trust the Author of the bible and of life.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, keep my mind pliable to right thinking, never let me feel like I have all the answers. Make me a seeker of truth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
