“A man’s riches may ransom his life”

Proverbs 13:8 (NIV)

Do we own things or do our things own us? I believe inner peace is a good indicator.

As a young college student, back when annual tuition wasn’t as pricy as a large yacht, I saved up enough to buy a sweet Corvette. I remember driving my prized possession through downtown Washington DC. You actually don’t drive through DC, you “escape” as if playing a real life video game. I was a mess!

I compare that experience to my first car as a poor newlywed. It was a real old, black Toyota Celica with “custom dents”. I was surprised every time it started. My biggest concern was which junkyard would charge me the least to take it away when it died.

I backed that car into a large pole. My reaction was panic until I remembered what I was driving. I checked to see if the wheels were clear and drove carefree down the road.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, help me to use things without being owned by them. Give me the peace to focus on and enjoy relationships instead of possessions. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
